Our history

The pioneers of Ticino aviation had a grass runway in the area of Campo Marzio, a district of Lugano that still exists today.

Due to the building development of the City of Lugano, it was decided to move the operations on the plain of Vedeggio, in the area of Agno (where the airport is still located).

The Aero Club of Lugano was founded, which proposed the construction of a hangar and a runway 1 km long and 100 m wide.

Beginning of work.

Inauguration of the aerodrome (the Federal Air Office allocated a credit of CHF 20,000 for the construction).

During the war, flights were suspended.

Start of construction work on the airport structure also thanks to the Municipality of Lugano, which invested CHF 4,000.

Issue of authorization by the Air Office to the AeCS.

The first course for pilots was organized (1 instructor and 4 students), the school was supervised at that time by the Swiss Aero Club.

Newly expanded infrastructure and paved runway.

Temporary concession withdrawn by the FOCA due to a dispute with a local landowner. The Municipality of Lugano bought the land and the licence was restored, in that period Avilù was established.

The management of the airport was entrusted to the Lugano Motor Flight Group.

Avilù ran not only the flight school but also the airport.

The airport is sold to the Municipal Transport Company.

The Federal Air Office authorises the operation of an airfield for an unlimited duration.

Avilù adds to its activities those of  “C” office (ais) and handling.

Constitution of the Lugano Airport SA.

There was a strong willingness on the part of the director of Avilù to completely detach himself from Lugano SA Airport, this was due to a question of complete autonomy so that he could establish himself in the territory as a training and aeronautical culture centre.

Avilù has given up activities not related to education, dedicating itself exclusively to the training of pilots, trying to meet the needs of customers and the aviation world, creating new courses giving our customers the opportunity to get a good part of the baggage for its future.
